- [Voiceover] Make more meals at home. It's a great way to lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, a risk
factor for heart disease. Important prevention news from the American Heart Association's
Scientific Sessions. Here are the details. Two homemade lunches or dinners a day, or eleven to 14 meals a week was associated with a 13% lower risk for type 2 diabetes, a major risk factor for heart disease. Eating out may be convenient and easy, but it could be doing
more than putting a dent in your bank account. It could be contributing
to an expanding waistline. After eight years, those
who ate more homemade meals gained slightly less weight than those who ate out more frequently.


This new study suggests
that homemade meals can be a smart way to keep off the pounds, plus lower risk of type 2 diabetes. So, what makes a healthy homemade meal? Keep these recommendations in mind from the AHA. Include a variety of
fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, skinless poultry and fish, nuts and legumes, and
non-tropical vegetable oils in your meals. The American Heart Association has plenty of great healthy recipes.
