[Music] hi I'm Tracy Laughlin Beckerman I'm a registered dietitian in New York City and it's my job to help you figure out what to eat and why for the birth of a new year often come at the end of old habits or at least a renewed effort to change our ways but as many people resolve to eat better work out more that's for less the term old thirty seemed to get thrown around a lot not sure what it means Jerry's got the fab what envelope you should partake on today's episode of you versus food we're tackling full30 whole thirty is a thirty day eating plan that focuses on the consumption of whole foods and eliminates inflammatory food groups and processed foods the meal plan promotes eating meat poultry fish fruits veggies and healthy fats however it restricts the consumption of added sugars alcohol green beans legumes suet processed foods outages and smoking at a whole lot of foods to cut out it was created in 2009 by two certified sports nutritionist to help reset your metabolism and reshape your relationship with food the eating plans objective is to help people eliminate and then slowly reintroduce problem causing ingredients to help identify what might be causing distress to their bond as such whole 30 has become a super common New Year's resolution making it one of the most popular diets in January there is no guidebook that tells you exactly what scene every day I'm 30 although there are plenty of cookbooks with ideas but the numerous restrictions limit your choices substantially that being said here's what a typical day on full30 might look like for breakfast you could have three to four eggs scrambled in 1 tablespoon of e with spinach mushrooms and old 30 approved sausage for lunch you can go for a big salad with kale mix carrots peppers cucumbers half an avocado two roasted chicken thighs with avocado oil and balsamic vinegar dressing and later for a snack try a mixture of your favorite nuts like pistachios almonds and cashews and to end your day have some grilled salmon with 2 cups of mixed vegetables like broccoli green beads and Brussels sprouts plus assertive a cup of baked sweet potato with coconut oil Oh xxx has gained popularity because it's marketed as a way of life or a way to learn how to eat rather than a way to diet plus it expels benefits that range from improvements in food and energy to healthy weight management the definite end dates a hard 30 days is likely another reason so many people are aimed to give it a try I mean you can do anything for a month or can you well 30 days of restricted and rather limited eating is certainly no walk in the park an entire month but before we start to poke holes in this popular approach to hash tag new year new you let's take a look at the Bennett's as can be expected there are many benefits associated with eating whole unprocessed foods and taking a break from drinking alcohol so let's start there number one it may help identify foods that your body is sensitive to or cannot handle in large quantities number two the diet challenges the mentality that weight should dictates how you feel so much so that it's not completely marketed as a weight loss diet in fact whole thirty followers are advised not to step on this scale for the duration of the diet sounds pretty positive to me number three the whole thirty diet can be a great way to learn how to read food labels and figure out how to choose less processed food alternatives number four the whole thirty diet encourages the consumption of work boots and veggies which I can definitely stand behind number five whole thirty can help promote meal prepping getting creative in the kitchen and grocery shopping all this being said so radical restrictions this short timeframe and extreme nature of the whole thirty diet does raise some red flags so let's talk about the con [Music] you versus a whole lot of food that you probably won't be able to eat this month sorry number one like completely eliminated grains and legumes you were losing essential nutrients such as iron Foley fiber healthy carbs and phiy vitamins just name a few number two there is no research on the efficacy of this diet in fact if ranked uneasily thirty seven out of the top 40 diets according to the US News and World Report and the positives are often based on anecdotes not research number three there is no evidence that eliminating dairy unless you're suffering from an allergy or intolerance has any true benefit for your health Dairy is an excellent source of protein calcium and vitamin D number four whole thirty cuts out a lot of food groups at once making it very hard to stick to even for thirty days number five if you break it think an accidental bite of cheese or sip of milk you have to start again at day one [Music] so what happens after 30 days we just go back to our old ways put there be repercussions the whole 30 diet promotes a restrictive mindset an overly conscious observation of food rather than enjoyment of meals this can lead to unhealthy food behaviors and binging following the 30 day plan but what happens on day 31 pizza party this can potentially lead to yo-yo dieting behaviors constant restricting and unhealthy fluctuations in hormones yes the founders of hole 30 claim that sticking to this way of eating for one month will allow your body to reset by removing food that may cause inflammation and duct disruption so after the 30 day eating plan you are encouraged to continue eating clean and minimally processed foods the field plan suggests adding foods back and slowly to help you identify which would make you feel good and which ones don't in the end those mindful news that you are forced to have for 30 days doesn't completely disappear at day 31 in fact this awareness is something that you do continue to honor in your relationship with food so so I entirely support this over restrictive way of eating well but what I can stand behind is the way that it makes you think about what you are putting into your body it addresses or challenges your relationship with the scale and duhhh encourages you to eat more Whole Foods thank you for joining me on this episode of you vs.
